She died on Friday at the Fairview Medical Centre in Montego Bay, St. James, at 2:30 p.m. due to dehydration and heart arrhythmia.
Miss Brown spent much of her life cutting sugar cane, and credits her longevity to hard work and her Christian faith.
She had four sons and two daughters. She outlived her eldest son who died in April at age 97, just days after she was named the world’s oldest person.
After Miss Brown's death, the Gerontology Research Group's World Supercentenarian Rankings listed Nabi Tajima of Japan as the oldest surviving person. She was born on Aug. 4, 1900.
Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, expressed his condolences in a Facebook post, calling her “an inspiring woman.”
Miss Brown was the last living subject of Queen Victoria, who died January 1901.
